WHAT ARE GENERAL NOTES?
General notes are not just an electrical concept, I’ve seen them on other trades’ prints, too!
General notes are the fine-details from the engineer to us trades people on particular tasks.
General notes work like this:
On your prints, you’ll have a circle with a number in it. You go to your general notes section and it will tell you the specifics on that detail number.
SOME COMMON EXAMPLES OF GENERAL NOTES
A really common example would be millwork drawings.
Let’s say you’re looking in the kitchen, many times it will have a circle with a number close to the kitchen.
When you read this designation, it will specifically tell you to measure your kitchen layout off these millwork drawings, not the electrical prints!
Another common example I’ve seen is when installing a switch with a thermostat above it, the engineer tells us to make sure we install them directly above each other, not on opposite sides of the stud so they aren’t in line.
General notes are as simple as that.
Make sure you read and understand these general notes as they are the fine-details of the job and can be the decision between passing and failing an inspection/walkthrough.
