In fine-finishing, it’s wise to start a hole with a spade drill bit from one side, then finish the hole off from the other side to ensure a clean hole (so it doesn’t break open and look messy).
I found a bundle of Spade Bits one day on sale, and ended up putting them in a pencil case. These spade bits lived in my Hand Tool Bag, and provided YEARS of tricky hole making if plastic pipes or wires were on the other side. Some electricians would make fun of me for them.. but I REALLY enjoyed spade bits in special situations. Be very careful of nails, as it will destroy your spade bit!
